Phuket and Koh Samui are Thailand’s two big beach islands, but they are on opposite coasts and feel different. Here is our Koh Samui vs Phuket comparison, so you can choose, or combine them.
| Phuket | Koh Samui | |
|---|---|---|
| Coast | Andaman Sea | Gulf of Thailand |
| Best months | About November to April | About January to August |
| Size and feel | Large, varied, busy in places | Smaller, relaxed, easy to drive around |
| Flights | Many direct international and domestic routes | Fewer routes, mostly via Bangkok |
| Signature day trips | Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi Islands, Similan Islands | Ang Thong Marine Park, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao |
| Good for | First-timers, families, food lovers, nightlife | Couples, slow beach holidays, villa stays |
Phuket has many more beaches, from quiet bays to busy resort strips (see our guide to Phuket beaches). Samui has fewer top beaches (Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam and others), with jungle-covered hills and waterfalls inland.
Phuket is the busier island overall, with a stronger touristy feel in places such as Patong. Samui feels more relaxed, with its liveliest spots concentrated around Chaweng and Lamai.
Phuket has the bigger and more varied scene: Bangla Road, beach clubs, rooftop bars and many day trips. Samui is more casual, with beach bars and fire shows on Chaweng and Lamai. See things to do in Phuket and things to do in Koh Samui.
From Phuket, the classic boat trips go to Phang Nga Bay, with its limestone karsts, sea caves and the much-photographed James Bond Island, and to the Phi Phi Islands. In season, the Similan Islands offer some of Thailand’s best snorkeling and diving. From Samui, the highlight is Ang Thong National Marine Park, an archipelago of dozens of jungle-covered islands with kayaking and a viewpoint hike. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, famous for diving courses, are a short ferry ride away.
Phuket Town has a distinctive food scene, rooted in the island’s Peranakan (Straits Chinese) heritage, as well as colorful Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Thalang and Soi Romanee. Samui’s culture is quieter: Fisherman’s Village in Bophut has a Friday night walking street, and the island’s landmarks include the Big Buddha and the Wat Plai Laem temple complex.
Phuket has the stronger airport, with more direct flights from Asia and beyond. Samui’s airport is run by one airline and tends to be pricier, but it sits close to the main beaches, and the island is also reachable by ferry from the mainland. Read how to get to Koh Samui.
Phuket is on the Andaman side and is generally best from roughly November to April. Samui is on the Gulf side and is generally drier across the early and middle part of the year. Because the seasons differ, one island is often better when the other has rain. Check the forecast for your dates, and see best time to visit Thailand.
Both islands have excellent family resorts. Phuket has more choice and calmer, shallower bays such as Kata, Kamala and parts of Bang Tao in the dry season. Samui’s north-coast beaches, such as Maenam and Bophut, have gentle water for much of the year. At the top end, Phuket is home to long-established names such as Amanpuri and Rosewood, while Samui is known for hillside pool villas with sunset views over the Gulf.
There are direct flights between Phuket and Koh Samui, so it is possible to visit both on a two-week trip. The best months for a combination are roughly January to April, when both coasts are usually dry. In other months, choose the island that is in its dry season rather than splitting your time between a sunny and a rainy coast.
