Phuket has one of Asia’s best selections of beach resorts, from sleek designer hideaways to family-friendly complexes. The most important decision is the beach, because a resort is only as good as its setting. Here are the best resorts in Phuket, beach by beach.

Ultra-luxury: Surin, Pansea and Layan

The north-west coast has Phuket’s most exclusive stays: hillside villas with private pools above secluded coves. Amanpuri, set above Pansea Beach, is the benchmark for island luxury, with private villas, a coconut grove and personalized service. Nearby, Surin and Layan offer similarly refined resorts on quiet beaches. See also Rosewood Phuket on Emerald Bay.

Nearby, Trisara has pool villas on its own private cove between Naithon and Layan, while Anantara Layan sits on one of the island’s quietest beaches. A little inland, in the hills above Kamala, Keemala has unusual nest- and tree-house-style pool villas in a forest setting, ideal for couples who want something different.

Bang Tao and Naithon: resort-style with space

Long beaches, beach clubs and large resorts make this area a good fit for families who want room to roam. Consider Pullman Phuket Arcadia Naithon Beach.

In the Laguna complex at Bang Tao, Banyan Tree Phuket was an early pioneer of the all-pool-villa resort, and is known for its spa and lagoon setting. Laguna’s several hotels share a shuttle boat and a golf course, which makes the area especially easy for families.

Kata Noi: hillside views and calm sea

Kata Noi is a small, sheltered bay with some of the island’s most luxurious resorts, tiered up the hillside to sunset views. It is quieter than neighboring Kata and Karon but still has restaurants a short drive away.

Nai Harn and the south: tranquil and scenic

Perfect if you want a quiet, relaxed stay with green hills, a lake and a sunset beach. Resorts here tend to be calm and low-key.

Cape Panwa and the east coast

The east coast faces Phang Nga Bay rather than the open Andaman Sea, so it has fewer swimming beaches but spectacular views of the limestone islands. Sri Panwa, on the tip of Cape Panwa, has hillside pool villas and a rooftop bar known for its sunsets. The east coast is also closest to Phuket Town and the piers for boat trips to Phang Nga Bay and the Phi Phi Islands.

Emerald Bay and Mai Khao

Just south of Patong, Rosewood Phuket occupies Emerald Bay, a small and private cove with a beachfront village of pavilions. In the far north, Mai Khao is the island’s longest beach, inside a national park where sea turtles nest. Resorts such as JW Marriott and Anantara Mai Khao are close to the airport, convenient for short stays or late flights, though the sea is rough in the monsoon.

Just across the bridge: Natai Beach

Natai, about 30 minutes north of Phuket airport in Phang Nga province, is a long, quiet beach with a handful of luxury villa resorts. It suits travelers who want Phuket’s flight connections without its crowds.

Kata, Karon and Patong: convenience

Large resorts with direct beach access and plenty of restaurants nearby. Good for first-time visitors and families; Patong is best only for those who want nightlife.

What to look for in a Phuket resort

  • Beach access: true beachfront, or a short, safe walk? Ask which side of the headland the hotel sits on.
  • Swim-ability: some beaches are rough or have rip currents in the monsoon (May to October); a good pool matters.
  • Room type: pool villas are the standout for couples; family suites with connecting rooms work best for children.
  • Dining: on a quiet beach you will eat at the resort, so check the restaurants.
  • Spa and kids’ clubs: especially valuable in the rainy season.

Phuket resorts by traveler type

  • Honeymooners: Amanpuri, Trisara, Keemala or a hillside pool villa at Kata Noi.
  • Families: Laguna at Bang Tao, or a large resort on Kata or Karon with a kids’ club and family suites.
  • First-timers who want restaurants on foot: Kata or Karon, rather than Patong.
  • Short stays and late flights: Mai Khao or Natai, close to the airport.
  • Island-hopping focus: Cape Panwa or Phuket Town, near the east-coast piers.

Split your stay

On a week-long trip, many travelers divide their nights between two very different resorts: three nights in a social, family-friendly resort with plenty of activities, then four nights in a secluded villa for a quiet finish. Phuket’s beaches are only 30 to 60 minutes apart, so the change takes only a short drive.

When to book

The best resorts fill up between mid-December and February, so book several months ahead. November and the shoulder months of March and April offer lovely weather at better prices. See our best time to visit Thailand.
