Planning a multi-country trip
Plan a loop, not a back-and-forth. The smoothest routes run in one direction, for example Hanoi south through Vietnam, into Cambodia, up to Laos and out via Bangkok. Doubling back costs days and, for Vietnam, a new visa.
Short flights connect the highlights. Direct flights link Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with Siem Reap, home to the new Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport. In Cambodia's capital, flights moved in September 2025 to the new Techo International Airport, about 40 minutes south of central Phnom Penh.
Mind the visa rules for re-entry. Most travelers from the US need an e-visa for Vietnam and Cambodia. If your route leaves Vietnam for Cambodia or Laos and then returns, apply for a multiple-entry Vietnam e-visa. We confirm the current rules for your passport when we plan your trip.
Two or three countries beats four in a rush. With two weeks, choose two or three countries. A full four-country journey through Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand is best with three weeks or more.

How long do you need for a Southeast Asia tour?
Two weeks covers two or three countries comfortably, such as Vietnam and Cambodia, or Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Allow three weeks or more for four countries, including time on a beach at the end.
Which Southeast Asian countries combine best?
Vietnam and Cambodia are the classic pairing, linked by short flights or a Mekong river cruise. Laos fits naturally between them, and Thailand, Bali or the Philippines make an easy beach finale.
When is the best time to tour Southeast Asia?
November to April is the best overall window for Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and most of Vietnam. Central Vietnam is at its best from February to August, and Bali is driest from April to October.
