Luang Prabang and Siem Reap are the two great heritage towns of mainland Southeast Asia, and travelers often wonder which to choose. The honest answer: they are different, and ideally you visit both. Here is our Luang Prabang vs Siem Reap comparison.
| Luang Prabang, Laos | Siem Reap, Cambodia | |
|---|---|---|
| Known for | UNESCO-listed old town, monks, French-colonial lanes, waterfalls | Angkor Wat and the Angkor temple complex |
| Feel | Small, slow, serene | Busy, lively, tourism hub |
| Main sights | Kuang Si Falls, Mount Phousi, Pak Ou Caves, morning alms | Angkor Wat, Bayon, Ta Prohm, Banteay Srei |
| Nature | Mekong river, jungle waterfalls, mountains | Tonle Sap lake, rice fields, Kulen Mountain |
| Nightlife | Quiet; night market and early nights | Pub Street, circus and bars |
| Best for | Slowing down | Archaeology and history |
A UNESCO World Heritage town since 1995, Luang Prabang sits on a peninsula between the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers. Gilded temples stand beside French-colonial villas, saffron-robed monks walk the streets at dawn and the pace is gentle. Highlights include the morning alms-giving procession, a sunset climb of Mount Phousi, the turquoise pools of Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou Caves filled with Buddha statues. See our guide to things to do in Luang Prabang.
Angkor is on a scale few places match: temples built over six centuries, from the soaring towers of Angkor Wat to the jungle-wrapped ruins of Ta Prohm. Siem Reap is also livelier, with food, markets, art and nightlife. See things to do in Siem Reap.
Luang Prabang’s food scene is gentle and local: khai paen (crispy river weed), or lam (a herb stew) and sticky rice by the Mekong, with French bakeries and wine bars as a legacy of the colonial era. Evenings are quiet, and many restaurants close early. Siem Reap is livelier, with Khmer dishes such as fish amok and lok lak, a growing fine-dining scene, cooking classes and the evening show of Phare, The Cambodian Circus. Pub Street keeps going until late for those who want it.
Siem Reap deserves three days; Luang Prabang deserves three, with a fourth if you want to add a river cruise or village visit.
Luang Prabang has an airport with flights from Vientiane and regional hubs, and the Laos–China Railway connects it with Vientiane. Siem Reap’s new international airport, which opened in 2023, is about an hour from town, with flights from Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and other Asian cities. Flights between the two towns are limited and may connect through another city, so check the schedule when you plan the route.
For both, November to February is cooler and drier. March to May is hot, and from May to October the green season brings rain. See our guides to the best time to visit Cambodia and Laos.
Many itineraries run Hanoi to Luang Prabang, then to Siem Reap, and on to Ho Chi Minh City; direct and connecting flights link the two towns, and we plan the routes and transfers for you. Explore our Laos and Cambodia Highlights, the Highlights of Indochina, or all our Southeast Asia tours.
Yes, for its peaceful old town, waterfalls and monks, especially if you like a slow pace.
For temples, yes; for relaxation and nature, Luang Prabang.
Siem Reap, because of Angkor, though Luang Prabang can also be busy in high season.
Yes, with a few days in each and a short flight in between.
Both are good value; costs depend on the hotels and tours you choose.
Siem Reap for temple adventures and the circus; Luang Prabang for a gentler stay with waterfalls and boat trips.
Six to seven days: three in each town, plus a travel day. It is easiest as part of a longer trip with Vietnam.
