“Exploring Cambodia with private guides and hand-picked boutique stays uncovers a depth and intimacy that ordinary group travel simply cannot provide.”

Cambodia rewards a short trip better than almost anywhere in the region: one world-class temple complex, a young, lively capital, and a coast that is still quiet. A good Cambodia tour package uses the right order and enough time at Angkor. Here is how to read and compare Cambodia tour packages.

Sample routes

5 days: Angkor focus

Four nights in Siem Reap: a sunrise at Angkor Wat, the Bayon and Ta Prohm, then outer temples and a village or floating-community visit. See things to do in Siem Reap.

7 days: Siem Reap and Phnom Penh

Four nights at Angkor and three in Phnom Penh for the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the city’s modern history. Read our Phnom Penh guide.

10 days: add the coast

Finish with beach time on the south coast, where Kampot and Kep offer river views, pepper farms and seafood. Ten days also lets you slow down at Angkor, spreading temple days across a few mornings and late afternoons to avoid the heat.

A sample 7-day route, day by day

Day Plan
1 Arrive in Siem Reap, evening in town
2 Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and the Bayon, Ta Prohm
3 Banteay Srei and the outer temples; evening show by Phare, The Cambodian Circus
4 Kulen Mountain or Beng Mealea, or the Tonle Sap floating villages
5 Fly or drive to Phnom Penh; riverside walk
6 Royal Palace, National Museum, Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek
7 Russian Market and departure

Ways to add depth

  • Koh Ker and Beng Mealea: remote temple sites north and east of Angkor. Koh Ker became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. It is a long but rewarding day trip.
  • Battambang: a relaxed riverside town with colonial architecture, countryside temples and a growing arts scene, between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.
  • Mondulkiri: forested hills in the east, home to Bunong communities and elephant projects focused on welfare.
  • The islands: Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem off Sihanoukville, for white sand and clear water.

What to look for in a package

  • Enough Angkor days: two full days is the minimum; three is better for a deeper look. Check the pass type and tickets in our Angkor Wat tickets guide.
  • A good hotel base: see best hotels in Siem Reap.
  • Guides who explain the history, not only the route.
  • Clear extras: flights between cities, meals, visas and tips are usually separate.

A sample 10-day route

  • Days 1 to 4: Siem Reap and Angkor, at an unhurried pace, with one day for Kulen Mountain or the Tonle Sap.
  • Days 5 to 7: Phnom Penh, with a day for the Royal Palace and museums and another for the city’s recent history and markets.
  • Days 8 to 10: Kampot and Kep. Visit a Kampot pepper farm (the region’s pepper has protected geographical status), take a sunset boat on the river, drive up to Bokor National Park and eat fresh crab at the Kep crab market.

What a package usually does not include

Read the inclusions carefully. Most packages cover hotels, private transfers, a guide on sightseeing days and the main entrance fees. International flights, the visa, travel insurance, many lunches and dinners, drinks and tips are usually extra. For Angkor, check that the pass is included and is the right length for the number of temple days, since the one-day, three-day and seven-day passes are priced differently. A good operator will also tell you the hotel names before you book, rather than “or similar”.

Getting around Cambodia

Flights between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh take less than an hour, while the drive takes about five to six hours, with stops at roadside markets and a pre-Angkorian temple site such as Sambor Prei Kuk along the way. From Phnom Penh, Kampot and Kep are about three hours by road, and the expressway to Sihanoukville has made the coast much faster to reach. A private car and driver is the most comfortable way to travel by road, and a good package includes all transfers.

When you compare packages, look at the travel time per day as well as the price. A route that crosses the country by road twice in a week saves money on flights but loses whole days in the car. For most first visits, one flight between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh and a road transfer to the coast is the best balance.

Can I fly between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh?

Yes. The flight takes less than an hour, compared with five to six hours by road.

Packages for different travelers

  • Families: keep temple mornings short, add a circus show, a cooking class and a countryside bike ride, and choose hotels with pools.
  • Honeymooners: a luxury hotel at Angkor, a private sunset at a quieter temple, and a few days at a beach resort on the coast or one of the islands.
  • History lovers: three full days at Angkor with an expert guide, plus Phnom Penh’s memorial sites, which UNESCO added to the World Heritage List in 2025, and the National Museum.

Private or group?

A private package costs more, but you set the pace: sunrise when you want, longer stops at your favorite temples and lunch away from the tour-bus restaurants. For first-time visitors to Angkor, a private guide makes the biggest difference, because the stories behind the carvings are what bring the site to life.

When to go

The cooler, drier months from roughly November to March are the most comfortable for temple days. April is the hottest and the rainy season follows, with green landscapes and fewer visitors. See our best time to visit Cambodia.

Entry in 2026

US visitors need a visa. The tourist e-visa costs US$30 (reduced from US$36 from 1 January 2025) and is applied for online; arrival also involves an electronic arrival card, so keep the QR code handy. Read our Cambodia visa guide for US citizens and safety notes in is Cambodia safe for tourists.
