Preah Vihear Temple Travel Guide
Perched dramatically atop a 547-meter escarpment in the Dangrek Mountains, Preah Vihear Temple offers one of the most awe-inspiring vistas in all of Cambodia. Situated near the Cambodia–Thailand border, roughly 140 kilometers northeast of Siem Reap, this majestic site is steeped in history, spiritual significance, and international tension.
A Temple Above the Clouds
Dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, Preah Vihear was constructed around the same time as Thailand’s Phanom Rung, but arguably surpasses even Angkor Wat in sheer drama and visual impact. The journey to the summit, via steep paths and successive temple platforms, offers both physical challenge and spiritual reward. The panoramic views stretching across Cambodia and Thailand from the final sanctuary are truly unforgettable.
Historical Significance and UNESCO Recognition
Though stunning in its design, Preah Vihear is also a symbol of national pride and historic conflict. While the temple structure lies within Cambodian territory, its access from the Thai side has led to a long-standing border dispute. Despite this, the temple was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 2008.
In recent decades, Preah Vihear served as a Khmer Rouge stronghold, leaving its mark on the site. Today, with stability restored, it is once again open to visitors seeking both cultural depth and natural beauty in their travels.
