Bali does luxury well, because the island’s best hotels are built around the setting: a river gorge, a clifftop, a rice field or a quiet bay. The trick is to choose the right area for each part of the trip, because traffic means you’ll spend most of your time near where you stay. Here’s how to plan a luxury vacation, area by area.

Choose your areas first

The best plan for most first trips is two bases: one inland, one on the coast. Distances on a map are short, but roads are slow.

Ubud and the Ayung valley

The cultural heart of Bali, with temples, rice terraces and a slow pace. For luxury, look past the town center to the Sayan ridge and the Ayung river valley, about 15 to 20 minutes away, where many of the best hotels sit. Examples are Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, and the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan, both on the river, and Capella Ubud’s luxury tents in the rainforest. See our Ubud page.

Uluwatu

Dramatic cliffs and small beaches on the Bukit Peninsula. The clifftop resorts include Bulgari Resort Bali and Six Senses Uluwatu, and Alila Villas Uluwatu, known for its contemporary design. It’s spread out, so you’ll rely on a driver.

Jimbaran and Nusa Dua

The calm, practical choice, close to the airport. The Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay has villas stepping down to the bay, and The St. Regis Bali is a classic beach resort at Nusa Dua. Both suit families.

Seminyak and Canggu

Beach clubs, restaurants and boutique villas, with the most traffic. Better for a lively few days than a quiet stay.

For a closer comparison, see our guide on where to stay in Bali.

Villa or hotel?

A private villa gives you a pool, staff and complete privacy, and it suits families, groups and honeymooners who want to stay in. A hotel or resort gives you restaurants, a spa and service on site, and it’s simpler for a short stay. Many luxury hotels offer villas with their own pools, so you can have both. Ask about the staff, the distance to restaurants, and whether the villa is on a main road.

A 7-day plan

  1. Days 1 to 3: Ubud and the Ayung valley. Rice terraces at dawn, a private temple visit, a cooking class or spa day.
  2. Days 4 to 7: Uluwatu or Jimbaran. Beach, cliffs, a sunset dinner, and one day for a boat or a coastal drive.

With ten days, add a night or two on Nusa Penida or a trip to Komodo; see our guide to a Komodo trip from Bali. Couples will find more ideas in our Bali honeymoon guide.

What to know before you book

  • The tourist levy. Foreign visitors pay a one-off Rp150,000 levy for each visit to Bali, paid online before or on arrival.
  • Traffic. Use a private driver. A transfer between Ubud and the south coast can take much longer than the distance suggests.
  • Nyepi. The Balinese New Year, usually in March, is a day of silence when the island and its airport close, so check the date before you fly.
  • Season. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the busiest and driest. See the best time to visit Bali.
