“Exploring Cambodia with private guides and hand-picked boutique stays uncovers a depth and intimacy that ordinary group travel simply cannot provide.”

Cambodia is a good country for a luxury trip because the best of it is small and personal: a few exceptional hotels in Siem Reap, a river capital with a royal palace, and a coast of private islands. Angkor itself needs patient, expert guiding more than a big budget. Here’s how to put a luxury trip together, and what makes it different from a standard tour.

What makes a Cambodia trip luxury

  • A private guide and driver. You set the pace and the hours, and your guide plans around the heat and the crowds. See our guide to Angkor Wat tours.
  • Hotels chosen for the setting. A pool and a quiet garden matter more here than a brand name, because you will come back from the temples in the heat of the day.
  • Flights and transfers booked together. Internal flights, boats and road transfers are arranged around your schedule.
  • Access. Early entry, quiet routes and a vetted boat on the coast.

Siem Reap and Angkor

Allow three nights. Angkor is quieter than it has been in years: Angkor Enterprise counted 510,528 foreign visitors from January to September 2026, down 27.6% on the same period of 2025.

For hotels, the Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor, opened in 1932, is the colonial landmark. Resorts such as the Park Hyatt Siem Reap and the Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra combine spas and pools with central or park-side locations. Phum Baitang offers stilted villas among rice paddies, and Shinta Mani and Jaya House are boutique hotels known for their community and environmental work. Rates and managers change, so we confirm the current choice when we plan your trip. Read our best hotels in Siem Reap guide.

Phnom Penh

One or two nights is enough for the Royal Palace, the National Museum and the riverfront. A private guide helps with the modern history of the Khmer Rouge years, which is part of understanding the country. See our Phnom Penh travel guide. Phnom Penh’s flights now use the new Techo International Airport, which opened in September 2025, so check which airport your ticket names.

The coast and islands

End the trip with three nights by the sea, from November to April, when the weather is dry and calm.

  • Six Senses Krabey Island. Forty villas on a small island, opened in March 2019, a 15-minute boat ride from a mainland reception near Sihanouk International Airport.
  • Song Saa Private Island. Two small islands joined by a footbridge, about 45 minutes by speedboat from Sihanoukville, with a focus on protecting the reef.
  • Alila Villas Koh Russey. 63 pavilions and villas on a long white beach, a little larger and more relaxed.
  • Knai Bang Chatt, Kep. 18 rooms built around restored 1960s villas on the water, without a boat transfer.

See our Cambodia beach resorts guide.

An 8-day plan

  1. Days 1 to 3: Siem Reap, with Angkor Wat at sunrise, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm, and a quieter second day at Banteay Srei or the outer temples.
  2. Day 4: fly to Phnom Penh. The Royal Palace and the riverfront.
  3. Day 5: Phnom Penh, the National Museum and a market.
  4. Days 6 to 8: transfer to the coast for an island resort, or by road to Kep.

What has changed in 2026

The land border between Thailand and Cambodia has been closed to travelers since 2025, and Thai officials said in July 2026 that it would stay closed for now. If you’re combining Cambodia with Thailand, plan to fly. Check conditions before you book.
