Marina Bay

Visit Marina Bay, Singapore

Specialist Overview

Marina Bay, Singapore

Marina Bay is the Singapore of the postcards: a ring of towers, gardens and promenades built on reclaimed land around a calm bay. It’s where most first-time visitors spend their first evening, and it rewards a second look by day. You can walk the whole loop in about an hour, and the best parts cost nothing.

What to see

Gardens by the Bay. The giant Supertrees are free to walk among, and the two glass conservatories, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest with its indoor waterfall, are worth the ticket on a hot or rainy afternoon. Each evening the Supertree Grove lights up to music in a free show called Garden Rhapsody.

Marina Bay Sands. The three towers joined by a ship-shaped SkyPark dominate the skyline. Hotel guests use the rooftop infinity pool; everyone else can visit the SkyPark observation deck. Below, the waterfront hosts Spectra, a free light-and-water show, most nights.

The Merlion and the promenade. Singapore’s half-lion, half-fish mascot faces the bay from Merlion Park. From there, the waterfront path crosses the Helix Bridge and passes the spiky domes of the Esplanade theaters, with views back to the historic Fullerton Hotel.

How to plan your time

Go in the late afternoon. See the gardens and conservatories while it’s light, eat at a hawker center nearby, then stay for Garden Rhapsody and Spectra after dark. Show times change from time to time, so check them on the day. Singapore is hot and humid all year, and short heavy showers are common, so plan indoor stops for the middle of the day.

Marina Bay is a short walk or MRT ride from the Civic District and Chinatown, so it fits easily into a day in the city. See our page on Chinatown and the best time to visit Singapore.
