El Nido is on the northern tip of Palawan, and the route you choose changes your trip by half a day. Here is how to get to El Nido by the two main routes.

Option 1: Fly direct to El Nido (Lio Airport)

Domestic flights from Manila or Cebu land at Lio Airport, about 4 km from El Nido town. Flight time is roughly 1 hour 15 minutes from Manila and under 2 hours from Cebu. The airport has no international service. A tricycle or a hotel pickup takes about 20 minutes to town. Airline coverage differs between guides, so check current schedules before you book.

The flights use small turboprop planes, so check your baggage allowance, which can be lower than on international or jet flights. Book early for the dry season (roughly December to May), when seats sell out. Your hotel can arrange the short tricycle or van transfer into town.

Option 2: Fly to Puerto Princesa, then take a van

Flights from Manila and Cebu land at Puerto Princesa (PPS). From there a shared or private van to El Nido takes about 5 to 6 hours on a winding road. Buses are slower still. A private transfer can meet you at the airport or hotel. If you suffer from motion sickness or travel with small children, this route is hard going.

Making the most of the Puerto Princesa route

Many travelers turn the long drive into part of the trip. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about two hours from the city at Sabang; visits need a permit, which a hotel or guide can arrange. Some routes break the journey at Port Barton, a small beach village roughly halfway to El Nido. If you take a private van, ask for a stop at a viewpoint or a lunch break; the shared vans stop only briefly.

Which route should you choose?

  • Short on time: fly direct to Lio. It saves about four to five hours but usually costs more.
  • On a budget or combining Puerto Princesa sights: fly to PPS and take a van, or visit the Underground River first.
  • Weather risk: flights can be delayed in the wet season; allow buffer days.

Arriving from Coron or Manila

  • From Coron: fast ferries link Coron and El Nido in a few hours, and multi-day island-hopping expeditions camp on beaches between the two. Both depend on the sea, so check conditions and keep a spare day.
  • From abroad: most international travelers connect through Manila. Leave a comfortable gap between your international arrival and the domestic flight, or spend the first night in Manila, as domestic connections can involve a terminal change.
  • Entry paperwork: register on the Philippines’ eTravel system before arrival. It is free on the official site.

When you arrive in El Nido

Visitors pay an environmental fee, which covers island-hopping tours for several days, so keep the receipt. The classic boat tours, named A, B, C and D, visit the lagoons, beaches and snorkeling spots of Bacuit Bay. Tour A, with the Big and Small Lagoons, is the most popular. Book a private boat for a calmer day and a flexible start time.

Getting around once you are there

El Nido town is small and walkable, and tricycles are the usual way to reach nearby beaches. Corong-Corong and Las Cabanas, south of town, are known for their sunsets. Nacpan Beach, a long stretch of sand to the north, takes about 45 minutes to an hour by tricycle or van over a partly rough road. Many resorts are outside town and include transfers, so check where your hotel is before choosing the airport route.

When should I book flights to El Nido?

As early as you can for the dry season, roughly December to May, because the small planes to Lio fill up quickly.
