Day-by-Day Itinerary in Detail

Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar: Gandantegchinlen Monastery & Choijin Lama

Land at Chinggis Khaan International Airport (UBN) where your private expedition guide welcomes you. Transfer to the 5-star Shangri-La Hotel Ulaanbaatar. In the afternoon, tour Gandantegchinlen Monastery to hear the deep chants of Tibetan Buddhist monks and gaze up at the 26.5-metre gilded statue of Megjid Janraisig.

Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar (5-Star Luxury) • Meals: Welcome Mongolian Feast with Traditional Morin Khuur Concert

Day 2: Domestic Flight to the South Gobi & Yolyn Am Ice Canyon

Take a morning flight south to Dalanzadgad (DLZ) over the boundless yellow-green steppe. Transfer in private 4WD vehicles to Yolyn Am (Vulture Gorge) in the Gurvan Saikhan National Park. Hike through the narrow basalt canyon where a thick river of ice survives well into midsummer despite desert temperatures. Check in at the world-renowned Three Camel Lodge.

Accommodation: Three Camel Lodge, South Gobi (National Geographic Unique Lodge) • Meals: Breakfast, Picnic Lunch & Gourmet Farm-to-Table Dinner

Day 3: The Singing Dunes of Khongoryn Els & Camel Trekking

Embark on a private 4WD expedition across the desert plains to Khongoryn Els, towering sand dunes stretching 180 kilometres in length and reaching heights of 300 metres. Ride two-humped native Bactrian camels alongside nomadic camel-breeding families before climbing the ridge at sunset to hear the acoustic “singing” hum caused by shifting sand grains.

Accommodation: Three Camel Lodge, South Gobi • Meals: Breakfast, Nomad Camp Lunch & Desert Sunset Dinner

Day 4: Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs: Roy Chapman Andrews Dinosaur Expeditions

Drive north across saxual scrublands to the dramatic red sandstone cliffs of Bayanzag. In 1923, American paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews made history here by uncovering the first scientifically recognized fossil dinosaur eggs. Walk the glowing orange canyons during golden hour with a resident geologist examining exposed Cretaceous strata.

Accommodation: Three Camel Lodge, South Gobi • Meals: Breakfast & Stargazing Dinner at the Lodge

Day 5: Return Flight to Ulaanbaatar & The National Museum of Mongolia

Fly back to Ulaanbaatar. Visit the National Museum of Mongolia to view ancient Bronze Age deer stones, Genghis Khan-era royal armour, and traditional silk deels from 20 ethnic groups. Evening at leisure to shop for ethical cashmere at the Gobi Cashmere boutique.

Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar • Meals: Breakfast & Contemporary Asian Fusion Dinner

Day 6: Flight North to Lake Khövsgöl: The Blue Pearl of Mongolia

Board a morning flight northwest to Mörön (MXV) in Khövsgöl Province, driving 90 minutes through fragrant Siberian larch forests to Lake Khövsgöl. Reaching 262 metres in depth, this 2-million-year-old alpine lake is so pure you can drink directly from its waters. Settle into a premier luxury lakeside wooden lodge.

Accommodation: Ashihai Luxury Eco Lodge / Toilogt Camp, Lake Khövsgöl • Meals: Breakfast & Fresh Salmon/Whitefish Catch Dinner

Day 7: Taiga Horseback Riding & Tsaatan Reindeer Nomads Immersion

Ride native Mongolian steppe horses through alpine meadow trails carpeted in edelweiss and wild gentians. Visit an encampment of the indigenous Dukha (Tsaatan) people, one of the world’s last surviving nomadic tribes who herd reindeers in the subarctic taiga and practice nature-based shamanism.

Accommodation: Ashihai Luxury Eco Lodge, Lake Khövsgöl • Meals: Breakfast, Wilderness Trail Picnic & Lodge Dinner

Day 8: Private Wooden Boat Cruise & Shamanic Ovoo Blessings

Board a private wooden motor launch to explore secluded rocky bays and wooden islands on Lake Khövsgöl. Stop at an ancient lakeside Ovoo (sacred rock cairn draped in blue silk khadag) to perform a traditional blessing by offering milk and walking clockwise three times.

Accommodation: Ashihai Luxury Eco Lodge, Lake Khövsgöl • Meals: Breakfast & Traditional Khorkhog (Lamb Barbecue) Feast

Day 9: Scenic Return Flight to Capital & Genghis Khan Statue Complex

Fly from Mörön back to Ulaanbaatar. Drive 54 km east to Tsonjin Boldog to stand before the colossal 40-metre-tall stainless steel Equestrian Statue of Genghis Khan. Ride the elevator through the horse’s head for a panoramic view over the sacred Tuul River valley.

Accommodation: Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar • Meals: Breakfast & Celebration Farewell Banquet
