Quick answer: Lake Khövsgöl (Khövsgöl Nuur), known affectionately as Mongolia’s “Dark Blue Pearl,” is an ancient alpine freshwater lake holding nearly 70% of the country’s surface freshwater. Nestled at 1,645 meters altitude against the Siberian border, it offers extraordinary wilderness glamping, horseback riding through pine taiga, kayaking crystal-clear waters, and authentic cultural encounters with the nomadic Tsaatan reindeer herders.
| Setting | An ancient alpine lake 136 km long and up to 262 m deep in northern Mongolia’s Sayan Mountains. |
|---|---|
| Heritage status | Established as a National Park in 1992 and designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2022. |
| Recommended stay | Three to four nights to explore both shores, ride horses into the taiga, and visit nomadic families. |
| Optimal window | Late June to late August for open water cruising, wildflower blooms, and mild mountain weather. |
“The water of Lake Khövsgöl is so pure that you can drink straight from the bow of a wooden boat while pine-scented taiga mountains frame the horizon.”

The “Blue Pearl” of Central Asia. Formed over two million years ago along the Baikal Rift Zone, Lake Khövsgöl stretches 136 kilometers from south to north and plunges to depths of 262 meters. It contains 1% of all the surface freshwater on Earth and is fed by 96 tributaries while drained by only one: the Egiin Gol, which flows into Lake Baikal via the Selenge River.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserve & Alpine Taiga. Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2022, the surrounding national park encompasses the transition zone between Central Asian steppe and the Siberian larch-pine taiga. The habitat shelters endangered wildlife including the snow leopard, Siberian ibex, argali wild sheep, brown bear, wolf, and moose.
The Tsaatan (Dukha) Reindeer People. The taiga valleys west and north of Lake Khövsgöl are the ancestral homeland of the Tsaatan, one of the world’s last remaining nomadic reindeer-herding cultures. Living in traditional canvas teepees (ortz), they follow seasonal migrations across the high tundra in deep communion with nature and shamanic traditions.
Active Wilderness Exploration. The lake’s crystal-clear waters provide exceptional visibility down to tens of meters. Explore the shoreline by sea kayak, take a cruise on the historic wood-fired steamship Sukhbaatar, or embark on guided horseback expeditions along the forested eastern slopes to Jankhai and Toilogt peninsula.
To reach Lake Khövsgöl, take a domestic scheduled flight (1 hour 20 minutes) from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön (MXV), the provincial capital of Khövsgöl province. From Mörön, a scenic paved road winds 102 kilometers north through rolling river valleys directly to the southern lake shore at Khatgal village (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours by private 4WD vehicle).
Lake Khövsgöl provides the ultimate lush, alpine counterpart to the arid sand dunes and flaming cliffs of the South Gobi. A premier 10-to-12-day Mongolia expedition pairs three nights in a private luxury ger camp on the shores of Lake Khövsgöl with three nights in the Gobi Desert, connected seamlessly via private aviation and chauffeur transfers via Ulaanbaatar.
The water temperature remains very cold throughout the year, averaging between 10°C and 14°C even at the peak of mid-summer. Quick dips are refreshing on sunny July days, though kayaking and boating are the preferred water activities.
Accommodations consist of boutique eco-ger camps set directly on the lake shore. Premier camps feature handcrafted felt gers equipped with comfortable beds, wood-burning stoves for cool mountain evenings, and private en-suite bathroom facilities.
The lake begins freezing in November and forms a solid ice sheet up to 1.5 meters thick from January through April, when the famous Khövsgöl Ice Festival takes place across the frozen surface.
