Kenrokuen Garden

One of the top three gardens in Japan, Kanazawa's primary attraction is a must-see for anybody visiting the city. Its central location means that most of the city's attractions, including the significant retail sector, can be reached on foot.

According to legend, Kenroku-en has all six characteristics essential to the design of the ideal garden, thus the name. Some seasons make it more difficult to find solitude, but if you go right when they open or early in the evening, you may miss most visitors.

Afterward, you may have time to take in the garden's famed ponds, streams, ancient trees, and teahouses. The Seisonkaku Villa is at the garden's border; it was formerly the home of the mother of the local feudal lord and is now a museum.
