The Torii Gate is most picturesque when the tide is high, but it's still worth viewing when the water has retreated, and you can get up close and personal with the massive monument.
Spend some time at the Tahoto Shrine to the right of Itsuku Shrine after seeing the World Heritage Site that is Itsuku Shrine. Continuing up this road will bring you to several interesting temples and the nature trail leading to Momiji-dani Valley. Stroll through the valley, which gradually rises in elevation, until you reach the cable car station for the two-stage ride up Mt. Misen.
You may hike down or take a cable car back up when you've finished exploring the monkey park. Returning to ground level, you may stroll the quaint retail plazas, feed the gentle deer, or take in the scenery.
