Being in Kyoto, a place where ancient and reverberated traditions can be found throughout, you’ll be able to participate in hands-on classes with instructors who have spent decades working and immersing themselves in these customs. And when we say ‘hands-on’ it’s not analogous to standing and watching someone perform a task. This is how you build a bridge to a better understanding of Japan’s customs as you will be a part of that heritage.

Individual Cultural Classes

Each cultural class is organized in conjunction with the Woman’s Association of Kyoto, and each class will feel personal, authentic, and personal. Whether you are lone traveler, traveling with a partner, or traveling through history with your family, any one of these experiences will enrich and deepening your trip to Kyoto.

An Exceptional Greeting and Warm Hospitality

Cultural classes will take place in the homes of official local Kyoto host families. When you arrive at the home your host family will greet you and your experience will start from there. Prior to arriving you will have, a taxi pick you and take you to your activity, along with an english speaking interpreter, to offer you assistance if needed. You will feel comfortable and welcomed visiting Kyoto and your hosts through the entire trip.

Each session is approximately two hours long and you will be guided by a master practitioner with years of experience (10-20+ years) and connection to the Cultural Class you have selected. They are letting you take part in and experience a part of their life as a cultural practitioner. They are not just teaching you a cultural aspect of life, they are willing to relate personal stories that speak on a cultural, traditional, and historical level so that you have an educational aspect and identification that reaches personal parallels.

Choose from a Variety of Cultural Experiences:

• Tea Ceremony (Sado) – Discover the rituals and philosophy behind Japan’s ceremonial tea preparation

• Ikebana (Flower Arrangement) – Learn the seasonal art of arranging flowers in harmony with nature.

• Japanese Calligraphy (Shodo) – Practice the elegant brushstrokes of kanji and kana.

• Kimono Wearing – Try on traditional kimono, available for men and women.

• Origami (Paper Folding) – Create cranes, seasonal designs, or holiday-themed paper art.

• Japanese Cooking – Prepare a traditional home-style Japanese meal with your instructor.

• Traditional Japanese Dance – Learn graceful movements to classical music.

• Paper or Fabric Crafts – Make your own handmade Japanese souvenir.

You can also combine origami with another class for a nominal fee, or pair any two classes to create a half-day cultural experience.
