The Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno and Air) sit off Lombok, and most travelers reach them by fast boat from Bali. The crossing is easy once you pick the right port and book ahead. This guide explains how to reach the Gili Islands from Bali, with ports, crossing times and tips.

The short answer

Take a fast boat. From Padang Bai the crossing to Gili Trawangan takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours; from Serangan and Sanur it is longer, around 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Which Bali port should you use?

  • Padang Bai (east): the fastest crossing and the busiest harbor. About 1.5 hours’ drive from central Bali (Ubud, Kuta), so it suits Ubud and eastern stays.
  • Serangan (south): convenient from Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta and Sanur, with a longer sea crossing.
  • Sanur: close to Sanur and the south, with a long crossing. Tickets here are typically bought online in advance.

Operators often include hotel pickup. Choose by where you are staying and your tolerance for road time versus sea time.

Choosing a fast-boat operator

Several companies run the crossing, and standards vary. Look for an operator with recent reviews that mention safety, life jackets for every passenger and departures that run on time. Avoid boats that sell more seats than they have. A slightly higher fare for a larger, better-maintained boat is worth it on this open-water crossing. If you are prone to seasickness, choose a morning departure, sit near the back and take medication before you board.

Crossing times (approximate)

  • Padang Bai to Gili Trawangan: about 1.5 hours; to Gili Meno about 1 hour 45 minutes; to Gili Air about 2 hours.
  • Serangan: about 2.5 to 3 hours.
  • Sanur: about 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

Boats stop at more than one island, adding about 15 minutes per stop.

Tickets and slow boats

Book in advance, especially for peak season, since popular departures sell out. A public slow boat exists and takes around nine hours, but most guides do not recommend it for travelers short on time.

The alternative route through Lombok

The Gilis are much closer to Lombok than to Bali, so flying is a sensible option if the sea is rough or you prefer a short boat ride. Fly to Lombok International Airport, then drive about two hours to the north coast. From Bangsal harbor, public boats take a short trip to the islands, and private speedboats leave from nearby Teluk Nare and Teluk Kodek. This route also suits travelers continuing to Lombok’s beaches or to Mount Rinjani.

Sea conditions

Morning crossings are generally calmer. Swells can be large during the rainy months of January and February, and July and August can bring strong winds. Keep a spare day if you have a flight to catch.

What to expect when you arrive

  • No cars or motorbikes: the islands are car-free. You walk or cycle, and your hotel may send a porter for your luggage.
  • A beach landing: boats sometimes pull up on the sand rather than a pier, so wear shoes you can get wet and pack in a bag you can carry.
  • Horse carts: horse-drawn carts (cidomo) are widely used, but animal-welfare groups have raised concerns. We suggest walking or cycling instead.
  • Cash: there are ATMs on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air, but they can run out, so bring some rupiah from Bali.

Moving between the three islands

A public island-hopping boat links Trawangan, Meno and Air a few times a day, and private boats can be chartered at any time. Many travelers stay on one island and visit another for a day of snorkeling. Off Gili Meno, sea turtles are common, and the underwater statue installation Nest is a popular snorkel stop.

Which Gili to choose?

  • Gili Trawangan: the liveliest, with bars and restaurants.
  • Gili Air: a balance of cafés and quiet beaches.
  • Gili Meno: the quietest, popular with couples.

The return journey

Book your return ticket with the same operator, which is usually cheaper than two one-way fares, and confirm the departure time the day before. Boats back to Bali typically leave from late morning to early afternoon, so an evening international flight from Bali on the same day is possible but tight. A night in Bali before your flight is the safer plan.
