Trek up to the Ijen crater

After a hearty breakfast, you'll board a vehicle and go to Pal Tuding (ranger station), the starting point for your walk around Mount Ijen. The hike to Ijen Plateau might take up to two hours and is often rather strenuous. You will walk along winding, forested paths until you emerge to breathtaking vistas of the Bali Strait. A stunning vista of the spooky crater lake in turquoise awaits you at the end of the trail. Wafts of multicolored smoke rising from below you and vivid yellow sulfur deposits all over the beach characterize the scenery, barren yet magnificent. Here, you may see sulfur miners from Indonesia carrying 80 kg of the hefty substance back up the crater on their shoulders. After taking in the sights of Ijen Plateau, you'll make your way back down to Pal Tuding, where your car is waiting.

The journey requires careful footing due to occasional inclines. We recommend good traction walking boots or trainers. It's important to remember that the route may become quite slick in the dry season owing to a coating of loose pebbles and dust. As you descend from the crater rim, please use extreme caution.
