Specialist Overview

Gili Islands, Lombok, Bali & Indonesia

The Gili Islands are three small coral islands off the north-west coast of Lombok, with white sand, clear water and no cars or motorbikes. You get around on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn cart, and the pace is slow. Each island has its own character, so choosing the right one makes a difference.

Which island?

Gili Trawangan is the largest and liveliest, with the most restaurants, dive shops and nightlife, and quieter stretches on its north and west coasts.

Gili Meno is the smallest and quietest, the choice for couples who want a beach and not much else.

Gili Air, closest to Lombok, sits between the two: relaxed, with good cafes and a local village feel.

What to do

Snorkeling is the main event. Sea turtles are often seen in the shallows around all three islands, and dive schools on each island run courses and trips. Sunset on the west coast of Gili Trawangan, with Bali’s Mount Agung on the horizon on a clear day, is a daily ritual. Lombok itself, a short boat ride away, has waterfalls, Rinjani volcano and quieter beaches in the south.

Getting there

Most travelers come by fast boat from Bali. From Padang Bai the crossing takes about one and a half to two and a half hours; from Serangan and Sanur it’s longer. The sea can be rough, especially around January and February and July and August, so a well-run boat and a flexible plan help. Our guide to getting to the Gili Islands from Bali covers ports and boats in detail.

How long to stay

Two or three nights is right for most people, often at the end of a Bali trip. See also Lombok.
