Srirangam: The Temple Town

• Seven Concentric Walls: The complex is enclosed by seven large walls, and its layout is so expansive that it feels like a town within a town. Here, visitors can witness both religious rituals and local life.
• Temple Elephants: The temple is famous for its resident elephants, who roam the area and receive offerings from devotees. Their presence adds a vibrant touch to the sacred atmosphere.
• Carved Towers: Recently painted to highlight their intricate carvings, the towering structures of Srirangam add to the temple’s charm and historical significance.

Cauvery River and Pilgrims’ Customs

The Cauvery River, which flows through the town, is considered sacred by pilgrims who visit to cleanse themselves spiritually. A unique custom involves:

• Head Shaving Rituals: Pilgrims shave their heads as part of their spiritual journey, often covered with a turmeric paste to protect their scalps from the sun. This gives the pilgrims an exotic yellow glow, adding a distinct cultural element to the town’s atmosphere.
