Shanghai – Where Old and New Meet

Shanghai is a city of contrasts, where a modern skyline, historic neighborhoods and everyday local life come together. Along the Huangpu River, The Bund is lined with grand historic buildings, while across the river, Pudong rises with its futuristic skyline and famous Oriental Pearl Tower.

Away from the main sights, you can discover a quieter side of the city in the old lanes, traditional lilongs and shikumenhouses. The former French Concession is also worth exploring, with leafy streets, cafés, galleries and parks that offer a more relaxed feel. Yu Garden provides another glimpse of traditional Shanghai, with its classical buildings, ponds and peaceful courtyards.

For a livelier side of the city, head to Nanjing Road, Tianzifang or Xintiandi, where shops, restaurants, galleries and historic streets come together. The former industrial area of M50 has also become a popular creative and arts district.

Whether you enjoy history, architecture, food, art or simply experiencing local life, Shanghai has plenty to offer beyond its famous skyline. Spring and autumn are generally comfortable times to visit, while the major holiday periods in May and October can be much busier.
