Thailand in January: Weather by Region, Where to Go and What to Know

January is one of the easiest months to visit Thailand. Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the Andaman coast around Krabi and Phuket are in the cool, dry season, with daytime highs of 86 to 91°F and almost no rain. The exception is the Gulf coast: Koh Samui gets about 8 rainy days in January, against fewer than 2 in Bangkok. Plan Bangkok, the north and the Andaman beaches, and skip the Gulf islands until February.

Thailand weather in January by region

Place Average high Average low Rain
Bangkok 32.7°C / 91°F 23.4°C / 74°F 23.6 mm over 1.9 days
Chiang Mai 30.0°C / 86°F 15.7°C / 60°F 11.3 mm over 1.0 day
Krabi (Andaman coast) 32.9°C / 91°F 21.6°C / 71°F 5.3 rainy days
Koh Samui (Gulf coast) 29.0°C / 84°F 24.2°C / 76°F 126.8 mm over 8.5 days

These are long-term averages from WMO and Thai Meteorological Department data, so any single day can differ. Bangkok’s January humidity averages about 68%, against about 75% from June to August. Chiang Mai’s mornings are the cool part: an average low of 60°F means you’ll want a light sweater for early starts at the temples.

Where to go in January

Start in Bangkok for two or three days. The heat is bearable in January, so you can walk between the Grand Palace, Wat Arun and the river piers without the afternoon storms you’d get in summer. Our Bangkok page has the details.

Fly north to Chiang Mai for three days. January suits the old city, hill temples such as Doi Suthep and day trips into the mountains, because the air is cool and dry. Read about Chiang Mai, and add Sukhothai or Ayutthaya if you like ruins.

Finish on the Andaman coast, where Krabi’s beaches and the islands are in their dry season. Koh Samui and the Gulf side get more rain in January than Bangkok does (126.8 mm against 23.6 mm), so Samui is a better choice from February. See Koh Samui for when it dries out.

A 10-day January route

Stop Nights Why this month
Bangkok 3 Low rain, lower humidity, walkable
Chiang Mai 3 Cool mornings, clear skies for the hills
Krabi or Phuket 4 Andaman dry season, few rainy days

Domestic flights link all three. Our private Thailand tours can be shortened or stretched around this route.

Haze in the north

Chiang Mai has a burning season, when farmers and forest fires fill the air with smoke. IQAir says it typically runs from January to April and peaks in March. January is usually the clear end of that window, but the timing shifts from year to year. Check the air quality index a few days before you fly, and consider moving Chiang Mai earlier in the trip if the forecast looks bad.

Entry rules for US and UK passports

Thailand cut its visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days on 15 September 2026. US and UK passport holders are on the 30-day list in the Royal Gazette notification, so a 10-day trip fits easily. Every foreign visitor also has to fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online, free, at tdac.immigration.go.th. Rules are changing quickly, so check the official TDAC site and your embassy before you fly.
