Mondulkiri – Cambodia’s Remote Highland Wilderness

Tucked away in Cambodia’s far east, Mondulkiri is the country’s largest yet most sparsely populated province — a remote frontier home to just 50,000 people, mainly Phnong hill tribes and Khmer communities.

Reaching Mondulkiri from Phnom Penh involves a rugged, bumpy journey — not for the faint-hearted — but those who brave the ride are rewarded with dramatic landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and encounters with vibrant indigenous cultures. With slowly improving infrastructure, this once-isolated region is becoming more accessible to adventurous travelers.

What to Do in Mondulkiri
Trekking is one of the best ways to explore the province. Short treks take you through traditional villages and the edges of tropical forest, while longer routes delve deep into the untouched jungle. Along the way, you’ll pass pristine waterfalls — including Bou Sra, Cambodia’s largest and most iconic.

Hill Tribe Culture
The hill tribes of Mondulkiri live in communal homes shared by several families, reflecting their strong sense of community. Their unique architecture, customs, and way of life offer a compelling contrast to mainstream Cambodian culture, making a village visit a deeply rewarding cultural experience.

Jungle Treks and Wildlife
For the truly adventurous, multi-day treks with overnight forest camping are available. As you move deeper into the wilderness, the forest becomes wilder and more pristine — and if you’re lucky, you may spot rare wildlife like leopards, sun bears, or even gaur.
