What to see

Sabah Tourism Board describes the Kinabatangan as Malaysia’s second-longest river at 560 kilometres and identifies the Lower Kinabatangan as a major ecosystem and Ramsar site. Proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants, hornbills and crocodiles may be seen, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

How to plan a visit

Morning and late-afternoon cruises are the main way to look for wildlife. Stay at least three days if possible, use a licensed local operator and follow boat, forest and animal-distance rules. Ask about transfers from Sandakan and the exact lodge jetty.

How it fits a private itinerary

Combine two or three nights on the river with Sandakan or Sepilok. Add Gomantong Cave only after checking the day’s road and cave conditions.

Opening hours, access, transport and seasonal conditions can change. Sources were checked on 1 November 2026; reconfirm details for your dates.

Verified data: The Kinabatangan River runs for about 560 kilometres through Sabah, so wildlife cruises should be planned by river section and lodge location rather than as a short day trip. Checked 1 November 2026 against Sabah Tourism Board.
