Sunrise at Mount Bromo: A Journey Across the Volcano’s Sea of Sand

Your adventure will begin around 4 a.m. with a pick up at your hotel to transport you in a private 4×4 vehicle to the summit of Mount Penanjakan. This ride will set the tone for the rest of your unforgettable day, but the best is still to come at the observation platform where you will take in an epic sunrise.

As we near the first flight of stairs leading to the viewing area, you will notice people (mostly locals) selling hot drinks and offering puffer jackets for rent. They are an excellent opportunity to warm up before the walk up the stairs and to feel comfortable as you prepare for the perfect moment we will be watching unfold before us.

After the stair climb, and when you finally reach the observation platform, the view before you will be unlike any other experiences you have had in your life. As the sun rises, it will illuminate the massive Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park and the caldera of the massive volcano. The surrounding peaks will begin to peek above the morning mist including the well-known Mount Bromo. The atmosphere will be serene, tranquil, and awe-inspiring as you take in nature at its purest.

Once you soak in a bit of the sunrise, you will venture down from the observation platform. From here you will begin your trek across the caldera, specifically towards Mount Bromo’s crater. Your guide will be there to assist you, and you will either have the option to take a local horse to the crater, or walk. It is about 2 kilometers to get from the viewpoint to the crater, but it will be a scenic trek allowing you plenty of opportunity to take in the beauty of nature around you.

The trek towards the summit of Mount Bromo‘s crater will be nothing short of amazing as you experience the beauty, raw-power, and magnificence of one of Indonesia’s most famous active volcanoes. No matter if you choose to ride a local horse or walk, you will never forget the experience walking across the vast sea of volcanic sand.

As you explore this one-of-a-kind destination, make sure you take photos of the crater, the smoking summit, and the expansive calderas. You will appreciate the memories for a lifetime!
