Xiamen: A Relaxed Coastal Escape in Southeast China

A historic port city with a subtropical climate and breezy seaside charm, Xiamen is known for its palm-lined beaches, colonial architecture, and relaxed atmosphere. Located on the southeastern coast of China, the city sprawls across Xiamen Island, the nearby mainland, and Gulangyu Island, a pedestrian-only islet steeped in history and European influence.

Top Things to Do in Xiamen

1. Discover Gulangyu Island

Take a short 20-minute ferry ride to this UNESCO-listed island, once a foreign enclave. Walk shaded streets past Victorian-era mansions, explore the Piano Museum, and climb Sunlight Rock for sweeping coastal views. No cars are allowed, which adds to its tranquil charm.

2. Visit the Fujian Tulou

A two-hour drive west takes you to the Hakka minority’s tulou — fortified, circular earth buildings built for communal living and defense. Over 3,000 tulou are UNESCO-protected. Visiting with a guide brings alive their rich history and communal spirit.

3. Explore Hulishan Fortress

Built between 1894–1896, this Qing Dynasty fort guards the Taiwan Strait. View historic iron cannons, including the world’s largest 19th-century Krupp cannon, and learn about the battles fought here through interactive displays and guide-led tours.

4. Relax on Xiamen’s Beaches

  • Huangcuo Beach: Quieter and great for peaceful walks.

  • Baicheng Beach: Popular for water sports and scenic cycling routes.
Both offer an inviting escape from the urban bustle.

5. Nanputuo Temple

A revered Buddhist site dating back over 1,000 years. Explore Qing-era temples, lotus ponds, and pagodas nestled beneath the Wulao Peaks with sea views. A peaceful spiritual and cultural retreat.

6. Xiamen Museum

Home to 20,000 artifacts including ceramics, calligraphy, jade, and relics from Fujian and Taiwan. Free to enter, with English audio guides and insightful exhibitions on regional culture and Chinese history.

Why Visit Xiamen?

  • A unique blend of beachside relaxation and rich cultural heritage

  • Fascinating day trips to UNESCO tulou villages

  • Easy access via high-speed rail and domestic flights

  • Less crowded than China’s big metropolises, with a laid-back, coastal vibe

Best Time to Visit Xiamen

April–May and October–November offer the most pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Avoid national holidays and peak summer when domestic tourism is at its height.
