Sasan Gir: The Last Refuge of the Asiatic Lion in India

Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Gujarat, is the only place in the world where you can see the Asiatic lion in its natural habitat. This protected area, established in 1980, has played a vital role in saving the species from extinction. From fewer than 200 lions, the population has grown to an estimated 674 lions as of 2020.

Conservation and Controversy

While the sanctuary has seen conservation success, it hasn’t been without challenges. The creation of the park required converting local grazing lands, affecting traditional herding communities. As deforestation continues near villages, locals often rely on the sanctuary for fuel wood, putting pressure on the lions’ habitat once again.

When to Visit Sasan Gir

The best time to visit Sasan Gir is from December to April, when temperatures are pleasant and wildlife viewing is at its best. The park remains closed from mid-June to mid-October during the monsoon season, though opening dates may vary slightly based on weather patterns.
