The Little Rann of Kutch is a stark, expansive landscape of salt flats stretching endlessly across western India. Mostly made up of low-lying saline marshes—once part of the sea bed—this unique terrain comes to life during the monsoon, when islands called beyts are dotted with hardy vegetation like acacia, scrub, and coarse grasses.
Wild Ass Sanctuary
To safeguard the habitat from expanding salt extraction operations, the Wild Ass Sanctuary was established in 1973. It remains the last refuge of the endangered Asiatic wild ass. These chestnut-colored animals, marked by a dark stripe along their backs, are often spotted roaming the plains—especially during the quiet hours of early morning or late afternoon.
