While Rajasthan is famed for its fortress cities, the true jewel in India’s crown of forts lies just south of Agra in Madhya Pradesh. Gwalior Fort, once described by Mughal emperor Babur as “the pearl in the necklace of Indian forts,” rises from the central plains in dramatic isolation, offering sweeping views and a deep connection to India’s medieval past.

Gwalior Fort: A Majestic Stronghold
The city of Gwalior has been settled since the 2nd century, and today its fort dominates the skyline from a sandstone plateau. Legend says it’s named after Gwalipa, a sage who healed a leprous king with water from a sacred pond — the fort was built around this very pond. Within its walls lie mahals (palaces), shrines, perfumed pools, and even an archaeological museum. A guide — and a torch — are recommended for exploring its subterranean passages.

Jain Rock Sculptures
Carved directly into the cliffs below the fort are over 1,500 Jain statues, from small 15 cm figures to towering 17 m icons. The rock-cut facades draw comparisons to Petra and offer a remarkable, lesser-known spectacle.

Beyond the Fort
The opulent Jai Vilas Palace, once the Scindia family’s residence, blends European grandeur with Indian elegance. Tour highlights include red carpets, crystal chandeliers, a golden hall, and even a silver train once used to serve cigars at dinner parties.

Nearby, the peaceful Tomb of Tansen, one of India’s greatest classical musicians, becomes the setting for a music festival each November. After exploring the fort and city, consider attending the dramatic sound and light show held at the fort every evening.

Stay in Royal Style
The Usha Kiran Palace, originally built to host the Prince of Wales, now offers guests an atmospheric stay with Art Deco touches.

Best Time to Visit Gwalior
The ideal months are from October to March when skies are clear and temperatures are mild. December and January are cooler and quieter, perfect for exploring without the crowds.
