Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park: Vietnam’s Underground Wonderland

Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park is a beautiful and wild place in central Vietnam. It’s full of green jungle, tall limestone cliffs, and hidden caves. The park was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003 and is one of the best places in Asia for cave exploration.

There are more than 300 caves in the area, though many have not yet been fully explored. The Ban Doong people have lived here for generations, but it wasn’t until the 1990s that experts began to study the caves in detail.

One of the most famous caves is Paradise Cave. It stretches for 31 kilometers, but visitors can walk through the first kilometer on wooden paths. The cave is filled with huge stalagmites and stalactites that look like something from another world. Phong Nha Cave is nearby and can only be reached by boat, passing rice fields and water buffalo before entering the cave.

For adventurous travelers, multi-day hikes through the jungle lead to even bigger caves like Hang En, where you can camp on a beach inside the cave, and Son Doong – the largest cave in the world. These trips involve trekking, swimming, and camping, and offer an unforgettable experience.

If you prefer a slower pace, the area also has riverside cafés, kayaking, and cycling routes. Chay Lap Farmstay is a friendly, local-run place to stay, with views of the limestone hills and a pool to relax in.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from April to August, when the weather is warm and dry. July and August can be very hot. From December to March, it’s cooler and less humid, but bring warm clothes if you’re camping. Avoid the rainy season from September to early December, when flooding can close the caves.

Whether you want adventure or quiet nature, Phong Nha-Ke Bang is a special place you won’t forget.
