Wiang Kum Kam – Ancient Lost City of Chiang Mai

Being only 3km south of Chiang Mai, Wiang Kum Kam is a ruin of an old city that used to be the first capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Established in the late 13th century by King Mangrai, Wiang Kum Kam thrived for a brief moment, prospering only to fall into disuse because of the Ping River overflowing and flooding. Finally forgotten, a city that had covered for centuries in silt, was uncovered by archaeologists in the 1980s.

Today Wiang Kum Kam is an archaeological actractive site for you to wander among ancient ruins, temples, chedis, and monuments siting on a leisurely riverside plain. There are more than 40 locations to explore. Some interesting features include Wat Chedi Liam has a five tiered pagoda in Mon style; Wat Chang Kham named the “Elephant-Propped Temple” as the base supports are elephant shapes; and Wat Pu Pia, where you still can admire some fine stucco ornaments and an overall well-preserved plan.

Visiting Wiang Kum Kam is a journey back in time, to where the roots of northern Thai history are, and without the crowds found at the main attractions in Chiang Mai. You can enjoy touring the site via bicycle, horse and carriage, or even as a local tram can be flagged down. Wiang Kum Kam is a rewarding and unique day trip. As a historical and sometime cultural seeker, this, “lost kingdom” is a hidden gem not to be missed.
