Getting to know Nong Khai
While this town is often just associated for being the border crossing between Thailand and Laos, Nong Khai has much more to offer than just its ‘friendship bridge’. For those who don’t mind getting off the beaten track a bit, Nong Khai is a great jump off spot for treks through the iconic Isaan region of Thailand. The area is marked by friendly locals and some of Thailand’s most delicious (and spicy!!) foods, which offer plenty of cause for making the journey out.
The region is also known for its iconic Buddhist temple, Sala Keoku. Also known as Wat Khaek, this temple is more like a park with a huge assortment of Buddhist statues illustrating the area. Some reaching 25 meters high, this park is a true testament to its creator’s (Luang Pu Bounleua Sulilat) Buddhist faith and practice. For a truly alternative visit in the Nong Khai area, this is a great spot to visit.
