Discover Sumba: A Hidden Gem for Culture and Relaxation
Though increasingly popular, this island remains one of Indonesia’s most off-the-beaten-path treasures, offering serene beaches, traditional tribal culture, and stunning ikat cloth. Just a short two-hour flight from Bali’s Denpasar, it provides an ideal escape for relaxation and cultural exploration.
Geology of the Island
Situated in the southern arc of Nusa Tenggara, the island was shaped by raised coral reefs, limestone, and sedimentary rock, unlike the volcanic islands of the region. It is even believed to be a fragment torn off from northern Australia.
Eastern Region: The Heart of Tradition
In the east, locals depend on cattle, water buffalo, and the famous native horse. This area is known for its exquisite ikat textiles, often exported to Bali, although the finest pieces are kept for ceremonies. Despite the lack of major hotels, the region is home to the island’s oldest village, Prailiang, set against a stunning natural backdrop, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional life.
Western Region: Natural Beauty and Preserved Traditions
The western area, with its higher rainfall, is home to the island’s larger population and offers the best of the island’s natural wonders, including pristine beaches, diving, and surfing. The region is also known for its preserved animist traditions, with ancient tombs, high priests, and sacred rituals that visitors can witness. These ceremonies, though unplanned, can often be arranged through local guides or hotels.
