Chittorgarh Fort: A Historic Hilltop Fortress
Chittorgarh is a magnificent hilltop fort that towers over the surrounding landscape, located just two and a half hours from Udaipur. This vast complex holds centuries of history, including tales of sacrifice, bravery, and conflict.
The Historic Siege
In 1303, the Sultan of Delhi attacked Chittorgarh with the intent to capture the queen. Despite a valiant defense led by Bhim Singh and his army, they were overwhelmed by the Sultan’s forces. In a heroic act of resistance, the defenders donned saffron robes as a symbol of sacrifice. Meanwhile, the women and children inside the fort chose mass suicide rather than live under foreign rule.
Exploring the Fort
Today, Chittorgarh Fort stands as a testament to its turbulent history. The sprawling complex, filled with numerous ruins, takes at least half a day to fully explore, offering a glimpse into the rich past of Rajasthan.
