Aurangabad – Gateway to the Ajanta & Ellora Caves
Though close to ancient Hindu settlement sites, the current city of Aurangabad was established during the height of the Mughal Empire and named after Emperor Aurangzeb. Today, it serves as the ideal base for visiting two of India’s most extraordinary archaeological treasures: the Ajanta and Ellora caves, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Cultural Crossroads
Beyond its historical significance, Aurangabad has grown into a cosmopolitan center, thanks to its medical school and several higher education institutions. This student population brings vibrancy and diversity, giving the city a dynamic and youthful character.
Nearby Attractions
Within just three kilometers north of the city are the lesser-known but fascinating Aurangabad Caves, carved into the hillside and showcasing intricate Buddhist artwork. Also nearby is the impressive Daulatabad Fort, a 12th-century fortress perched atop a conical hill, offering panoramic views and a glimpse into the region’s medieval military architecture.
