Getting to know Savannakhet

Savannakhet is the second largest city in the country, it provides tourists with a mix of new and old; the French colonial quarter right next to a number of modern buildings that are beginning to sprout thanks to a thriving economy pushed by trade near Thailand.

Must-dos in Savannakhet include the majestic 15th century Buddha stupa, Wat Sainyaphum, and the photogenic Catholic Church constructed by the French. Areas of Savannakhet are also a part of the renowned Ho Chi Minh trail, a complex group of routes that links Southern and Northern Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict. There are good trekking and cycling spots in the region however those seeking a challenging hike will be disappointed.
